the ugly euphemisms

چکیده
in this paper, by analyzing some data from persian andenglish, it is shown thatpragmatically there are two main kinds of euphemisms.the first (common euphemisms) are used to be polite and not to hurt other'sfeelings on several subjects like sexual relations, death, birth, body parts, disability, mental illness, intelligence and insults. on the other hand, language users by substituting the first kind of euphemisms for unpleasantwords, try to preserve their own and addressee's social face. but the second,i.e., ugly euphemisms, are used to hide political and economic scandals, disguise the truth, and guide public thoughts when speaking about social issuesand events. it is at this point, when speakers and writers seek not so much toavoid offense as to deceive that we pass into the universe of dishonesteuphemisms.

Participants read aloud swear words, euphemisms of the swear words, and neutral stimuli while their autonomic activity was measured by electrodermal activity. The key finding was that autonomic responses to swear words were larger than to euphemisms and neutral stimuli. It is argued that the heightened response to swear words reflects a form of verbal conditioning in which the phonological form...

In recent years there has been an increase in the number of papers, many of which have been published in high profile journals, that address real environmental or ecological problems, but with flawed, subjective, and frequently hyperbolic arguments. I identify two such examples from the US Gulf of Mexico, linked by their focus on fisheries resources as the cause de jour, to illustrate the probl...

When monitoring a system wrt. a property defined in a temporal logic such as LTL, a major concern is to settle with an adequate interpretation of observable system events; that is, models of temporal logic formulae are usually infinite words of events, whereas at runtime only finite but incrementally expanding prefixes are available. In this work, we review LTL-derived logics for finite traces ...

There are different views concerning the meanings of the most important ethical concepts such as the goodness and the ugly. Accordingly, first he goes on to examine critically the theory of emotionalists as one of the most important non-cognitive theories. Th...
متن کاملUgly Criminal
Using data from three waves of Add Health we find that, consistent with theoretical expectations, being very attractive reduces a young adult’s (ages 18-26) propensity for criminal activity and being unattractive increases it. A variety of tests suggest that this result is not likely because beauty is acting as a proxy for socioeconomic status, although we cannot rule out the possibility that s...
